League History:
Our Golf League was founded in 1966 . It was initially composed of members from Bell Aerospace's IT department. Over the next several years, employees from various Engineering and other areas of the company joined . As the company's fortunes and employment waned, family members and friends were invited to join us.
Initial play for the Bell League was at the Creekside Golf Course in North Tonawanda. The league moved to Shawnee Country Club in Wheatfield a few years later and continued play there through the late 1980s.
In an attempt to improve on Shawnee, the league moved to the Deerwood Golf Course in 1989. This later turned out to be a bad decision. One month before the start of the 1990 season, we were kicked out! A Deerwood bogus residency requirement was the stated reason. The 1990 season looked doomed. However, we got lucky. Checking area golf courses we found that a league was leaving the Grover Cleveland GC. We took their spot!
2005 - a County Budget Crisis. The County threatened to not open their golf courses including Grover Cleveland GC. Another season in jeopardy . Good luck struck again. We discovered the "Buffalo Tournament Club" , a brand new course getting ready to open. With a consensus of all league members, we contracted to move to the BTC.
Unfortunately, things did not turn out as expected. Just weeks before the start of our golf league season, the County resolved it's budget crisis. They would indeed open Grover. As a result of this news, a number of league members elected to remain at Grover.
It was a sad moment in our league history. We left behind some good friends and acquaintances. Fortunately though, many other friends and family were looking to join us at the BTC. While Bell Aerospace may no longer exist our Bell Golf League still lives on!
